Chartreuse

Space Cat Fun Facts

Chartreuse is a vibrant highlight color widely used in fashion, technology, and public safety. It's also found in nature. But did you know this unique color added to the color wheel originated as part of an alchemist's recipe for a longevity health elixir?

The Carthusian Monks, also known as the Order of Carthusians, are a religious order of monks and nuns. In 1605, the Carthusian Monks in France received a manuscript containing a secret recipe for an "Elixir of Long Life" made from 130 herbs, plants, and flowers combined in an alcohol base.

The recipe has always been top secret; only three monks were taught to prepare the strictly confidential mixture throughout the centuries. The monks originally intended Chartreuse for medicinal purposes. The drink was named after the Chartreuse Monastery in the Chartreuse Mountains in France. Its unique purpose, taste, and color made it famous, leading to high demand. Eventually, the monks decided to limit their production, maintaining its exclusivity.

Chartreuse was first mentioned in 1884 as a color and is named after the drink invented to be an "Elixir of Long Life."
